My Notes

TIP: Write in Word and then cut & paste into blog. EASY and looks great. Easier to do hyperlinks this way!

Intro:
Reading is an oral endeavor
Learning to Read and Reading to Learn are not mutually exclusive! They go hand in hand all the way up through the high school years.

Phonemic Awareness & Phonics
Nursery rhymes
P.A. 2 years/10 min per day
Phonics= systematic
Read alouds are awesome, too! Example: Listen Buddy (Also excellent for prediction during reading and fluency practice as a Reader’s Theater script!!)

Fluency + Vocab + Reading Comprehension = 65% solution
We are more than just places with resources (Joyce Valenza)

Fluency
Students should read aloud and be read aloud to every day. Fluency is automaticity + prosody (expression + intonation) + appropriate rate
Don’t focus on decoding so can focus on comprehension
Model
· Choral Reading: Little Orphant Annie
· Echo Reading: Yo? Yes! And Epossomondas
· Reader’s Theater: Show my scripts and explain how I do them
· Books on computer: Show Tumblebooks from Avon website
· Poetry, poetry, poetry : Show my Teacher Page on Hickory website Model with popsickle sticks
· High school read alouds: ex.: Whirligig

Vocab
Most is learned indirectly. Read alouds are an excellent way to teach vocabulary because picture books have higher vocab than a college student’s spoken vocab!
** Direct instruction means always preview vocab prior to reading. But also define during reading and discuss after reading.
Example : The Gettysburg Address
· Importance of nonfiction
· Show LindasLinkstoLiterature
· Show amazon concordance ex: Fish is Fish
· Alignment with Social Studies Standards: Econ & 4th grade U.S. History (on my lesson plan page)
· KidsEcon Books : http://www.kidseconbooks.com/html/title_list__poster_set_1.html
· Author Studies: Patricia Polacco
· Have a word wall in the library: Show Avon’s Library Word Wall Words
· What about Stephen Krashen?

Reading Comprehension
Last year, ILF Conference did Mosaic of Thought as their One Book, One Conference book. AWESOME!
· Put Reading First / Mosaic of Thought / Classroom Instruction That Works Alignment
· What Do Good Readers Do? handout
· Discussion Starters for Any Book
· Making Sense of Social Studies : http://www.readingquest.org/strat
· Linda’s Links to Literature: http://www.lindaslinkstoliterature.com/
· My Personal Virtual Library http://www.avon.k12.in.us/Hickory/PVL.htm
· Interactive Read Alouds
